Bangalore, Mar 25 : Three-time BJP MP and the party's Lok Sabha candidate from Uttara Kannada in Karnataka Ananth Kumar Hegde has come under the Election Commission's scanner following complaints against him for "using caste and communal factors" during campaigning.

Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer M N Vidyashankar today said two complaints against Hegde for allegedly using caste and communal factors in campaigning had been received by the Election Commission.

He said the Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kannada district is now looking into the "veracity" of the complaints filed by media and political parties, and the EC is awaiting the report.

Meanwhile, the EC has transferred five officials -- Additional SP (Bellary), DySP (Kudligi sub-division), two circle inspectors (in Cowl Bazar and in Sandur circle) and Bellary City Commissioner -- in Bellary district to ensure "free and fair" poll.

The EC whip came as Congress and JD-S leaders alleged "misuse" of official machinery in the recent days in mineral-rich Bellary, a BJP stronghold, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. (MORE)
