Islamabad: Militants and extremists will be exterminated if they do not lay down their arms and accept writ of the Pakistan government, President Asif Ali Zardari said on Monday.

"Either the militants have to lay down arms, give up militancy and accept the state's authority or they have to be exterminated," he said during a meeting with parliamentarians of ruling Pakistan People's Party in the presidency tonight.

"Let there be no doubt or mistake about it," he said, adding that there was no turning back from the ongoing drive against militants and extremists till the complete elimination of the rebels.

Success in the war against militancy is being achieved due to the valour of the armed forces and the sagacity of parliament and all political parties on the other, he added.

Zardari also said the PPP is keen to "democratize the constitution" by removing from it "anti-democratic clauses injected into it by successive dictatorships".

A 27-member committee comprising representatives of all political parties has been set up to recommend amendments in articles which had robbed the constitution of its parliamentary character, he added.

The meeting was also attended by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and some federal ministers.
