Dehra Dun: Uttarakhand police shot dead a youth in the Ladpur jungles of Dehradun as he allegedly beat up a police officer, snatched his revolver and tried to flee following a routine checking during President Pratibha Patil's visit here.

The youth identified as Randhir Singh of Ghaziabad was killed on the spot but his two other accomplices managed to escape, SSP Dehradun Amit Sinha said.

Three motorbike-borne youths were stopped by Sub-inspector G D Bhatt on suspicion in the course of a routine checking at the posh Dalanwala area here during the President's visit here, police said.

Instead of revealing their identity, the trio beat up Bhatt and snatched his revolver. They later fled towards the nearby Ladpur jungles where police managed to surround them and asked them to stop, they said.

However, one of the youths fired on the police.
