Visits to poor homes not a disease for me: RahulMorena (MP), Nov 25: Breaking the security cordon and mingling freely with people at a poll rally, Rahul Gandhi says his visits to homes of poverty-stricken villagers in remote and far-flung areas is not a "disease" for him.
The scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family said he was often ridiculed for his home-stays and surprise visits to houses of villagers with people even suggesting it was a "disease". But Gandhi said he will continue to meet poor people. "I do politics for the poor, farmers and tribals and hence I do not see any problem in going to the houses of the poor," he said addressing an election meeting at the Police Parade Ground in Morena in Mahdya Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati and former Karnataka chief minister H D Kumaraswamy were among other leaders who have targeted Gandhi in the recent months for his home visits in villages dubbing it as a gimmick. The AICC general secretary said if going to meet destitutes in their houses was seen as a disease he would always welcome it. He advised the BJP to adopt what he was doing even if this was a disease as it would help the poor. Gandhi also charged the ruling BJP in Madhya Pradesh with not fulfilling promises it had made to the people of the State five years ago. He alleged that the BJP always made promises but did nto deliver on them. He said the BJP had earlier promised to build the Ram Temple at Ayodhya and now it was promising to end terrorism. Gandhi said that if one was in politics one must have the trust of people and whatever is promised should be delivered. He said that if a politician did not have the guts or courage to fulfil a promise it would be much better for him not to make it. Later, addressing election meetings at Shahdol and Bhopal, Gandhi launched a scathing attack on the BJP for evading real issues and raising irrelevant topics before elections. Gandhi said that right now, the BJP was talking of terrorism and blaming the UPA government at the Centre for not handling it properly. He said that terrorism did not mean that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh should not have worked for ensuring power and water supply to the people and done something for the construction of roads. Rahul said the BJP only made promises but did nothing to fulfill them and claimed that in sharp contrast the UPA government at the Centre did what it had promised it would do. He said Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi had promised that they will provide a government for the "aam aadmi" and they had done that precisely - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Share it
