Madurai, Oct 13: Eminent space scientist and academician Prof. N Vedhachalam was today conferred an honorary doctor of science degree by Madurai Kamaraj University.

Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala conferred the degree on the Scientist at a function at the university.

The citation the degree said that Vedachalam, over a 35 year career in ISRO, was responsible for the organisation achieving total self reliance in the inertial systems in areas related to Spacecraft mechanisms.

He had directed the realisation of Liquid Rocket stages for GSLV and PSLV Missions and indigenous development of ISRO's Cryogenic upper stage for GSLV. He was responsible for successful testing of the first Cryogenic Engine for 1000 seconds, it said.
