    Rajapaksa extends lead as troops surround Fonseka hotel





    Colombo: Incumbent Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa is all set to register huge victor over his army rival General Sarath Fonseka in the 6th Presidential Election 2010.

    The Sri Lankan President has been leading by huge margin over Fonseka, According to the Sri Lanka Election website.

    With over a million votes counted by 6 a.m. Rajapaksa had recorded 689,261 or 60.01 percent against Fonseka's 442,292 or 38.51 percent

    On the other hand, some media reports claimed that the heavily armed security personnel have seized the hotel in Colombo where Sarath Fonseka has been staying at present.

    According to the media reports, security forces have been seen outside the Cinnamon Lakeside hotel in Colombo and they were searching every vehicle entering the hotel premises.

    Fonseka has alleged that the government has bee trying to arrest him after his victory in the election. However, military officials refuted the claim.

    The island's sixth presidential election was held largely free of violence Tuesday with a turnout estimated to be over 70 percent.

    The department of elections said 14,088,500 Sri Lankans were eligible to cast their votes at 11,098 polling station from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to choose their next president mainly from Rajapaksa and Fonseka, though there are 22 candidates.

    Rajapaksa called the election two years ahead of schedule to capitalise on his popularity among the majority Sinhalese after ending the island's bloody ethnic conflict.

    Fonseka, who commanded the Army to defeat the rebels from 2006 to 2009, is equally credited for the victory.

    raajithayah this MR should leave now and give another a chance... even if SF looses in this election people will get to know about MR lately in their future... but then it will be too late for them to vote SF as the president.... srilankan people themselves have accepted thier failure in future... soo sad!!
    ChamariMR is the real Idi amin, not SF. He had his turn to rule. Now he has to give another person a chance, without being a greedy pig. Good Luck to Sarath Fonseka.
