Solar eclipse and superstitions in India





New Delhi: With the start of century's largest annual solar eclipse, the myths and superstitions have gripped India. Temple doors across the country have been shut down while people prefer to lock inside the houses to avoid the ill-effect of eclipse.

Some people avoid cooking, eating and drinking during eclipse period. The myth behind this is some bad rays enter earth during eclipse and it could be harmful.

There are strict warnings for pregnant women. They are refrained from any stitch work and other household works. It is believed that it can lead to deformities in the foetus.

The astrologists advise people to chant regional rhymes to reduce its effect. They also advised Ganga Snan (Ganga bath) when eclipse is over.

As the annual solar eclipse falls on the second holly bath of Maha Kumbha Mela, people thronged to Haridwar to take holy dip after the eclipse.

The scientists rubbished all this idea and asked people to shed away this falls superstitions. They urged people to watch the life time opportunity with some precautions.

But in the past few years, many people have overcome their fears and come out in large number to watch such celestial events.

SujayHow do you know scientists know everything and what they say is true? THere are several things that scientists still do not know about and cannot rubbish some possible truths. I am not saying all this fear is required, but all i am saying is we still dont know for sure :(
