Mumbai: Shiv Sena bagged the high-profile Bhiwandi East byelection after defeating Samajwadi Party. Shiv Sena Candidate Rupesh Laxman Mhatre elected to Maharashtra State Assembly by 1676 votes.

Mhatre defeated Maharashtra Samajawadi Party Chief Abu Asim Azmi's son Farhan Abu Asim Azmi.

With this win, the saffron outfit has wrested the seat, dominated by members of the minority community, from the Samajwadi Party in this district neighbouring Mumbai.

On the other hand, ruling BJP managed to win Gujarat by-election. BJP candidate Khorani Bharatbhai Vasharambhai registered overwhelming victory over his nearest rival Shiv Sena's Shamajibhai Bhimajibhai Chauhan. Vasharambhai declared victorious by 22368 margin of votes.

In Haryana's Ellenabad by-election, INLD candidate Abhay Singh Chautala has taken lead over INC candidate Bharat Singh Beniwal by 4707 votes.
