Melbourne: World No. 1 seed Roger Federer advanced into the second round of Australian Open 2010 after defeating Russian Igor Andreev.

The favourite Swiss player thrashed Igor Andreev by 4-6 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 6-0.

Federer, who is eying his 16th Grand Slam here in Melbourne Park, lost his first set to Igor Andreev 4-6 but overcame brilliantly in the last three sets here today.

However, Igor Andreev gave Roger Federer tough fight to win the first round of Australian Open.

Federer expressed relief after winning the game and said that the tough fight was expected. He showered praise on Andreev and said that he is a good player.

On the other hand, Andreev was not as lucky as his girlfriend Maria Kirilenko was. Maria Kirilenko stunned Russian Maria Sharapova in the first round on Monday, making one of the biggest upset of Australian Open 2010.
