Panchayat polls: Five hurt in clashes





Jaipur: Stray clashes during the Panchayat elections in Rajasthan today left five people, including two cops, injured, prompting police to fire in the air and burst tear gas to restore calm.

Members of two castes indulged in stone-pelting during the election of Pradhan for Kama Panchayat Samiti leaving five injured, SP (Bharatpur) Karnal Bahadur Singh Kapoor told by telephone.

He said police swung batons, lobbed tear gas and fired in the air to bring the situation under control, adding the injured included two policemen.

Twelve people were arrested in connection with violence, the SP said.

A clash between two communities, in which firearms were used, broke out during the election of Pradhan for Baseri Panchayat Samiti.

Police resorted to cane-charge to disperse them, SP (Dholpur) Surendra.
