New arrival in Dudhwa National Park

Lakhimpur: In a good news to nature lovers, a rhino has given birth to a calf in Dudhwa National Park, forest officials said today.

A female rhino, Rajeshwari, was seen along with the newborn calf in Kakraha block of south Sonaripur range of the sanctuary, deputy director of Dudhwa National Park P P Singh said.

With the arrival of the new baby, rhino population in the park has reached 29 -- seven males, 15 females and seven calves.

The figure is likely to swell further as three more rhinos are pregnant, Singh said.

"Forest officials have been deployed to keep a watch over the baby and the mother rhino," field director Shailesh Prasad said.
