Vadodara: Hitting out at the Centre for holding states responsible for rise in prices of essential commodities, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should take responsibility for failing to curb inflation.

Addressing a gathering during the 'Garib Kalyan Mela' at Petlad town, about 60 km from here, Modi said, "it is the responsibility of the Centre to contain the rise in prices and its failure cannot be passed on to the state governments."

The Centre has failed to keep its promise of controlling inflation. The Prime Minister should own responsibility over the Centre's failure to curb rise in prices of the essential commodities, he said.

On the occasion, the Petlad Garib Kalyan Mela distributed tool-kits and benefits worth Rs 42.66 crore to 25,000 beneficiaries of four talukas of Anand district.
