Erode: A 40-year-old man, who allegedly stabbed his neighbour to death after a verbal duel, was lynched by about 50 villagers here, police said today.

Velusamy of Thangapalayam had some misunderstanding with Eswaramurthy (28) for the past few days and it culminated in a quarrel last night. Suddenly, Velusamy stabbed Eswaramurthy, who died while being rushed to hospital, police said.

After committing the offence, Velusamy tried to escape.

But, local residents numbering around 50, who gathered there, chased him and beat him to death, they said.

Police have registered two cases -- one against Velusamy for murdering Eswaramurthy and the other against the villagers for beating him to death.
