The mortal remains of Teji Bachchan, mother of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, were consigned to flames at the cremation ground in Juhu today.

The funeral pyre was lit by Amitabh Bachchan.

Earlier, the funeral procession started at 10 A.M. from Bachchan's Juhu bunglow 'Pratiksha' and reached the Ruia Park cremation ground after nearly an hour.

Teji Bachchan passed away on Friday at Lilavati Hospital in suburban Mumbai. She died at 1:15pm.

Teji Bachchan had been unwell for the past few years. She had been hospitalized last year with several age related problems.

She had suddenly become critical for the last 24 hours and had been shifted to the intensive care unit.

The Bachchan family - including Amitabh, Abhishekh, Aishwarya - was at the hospital as the news broke. The body was taken to the Bachchan residence Pratiksha.

Friends of the family, including Managing Worker and Chairman of Sahara India Pariwar hon'ble Saharasri Subrata Roy Sahara, Anil Ambani, Amar Singh, Danny Denzongpa, Sonali Bendre were present with the family to extend their support.

A Sikh from Karachi, she married Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan in 1941. She is survived by her two sons Amitabh and Ajitabh.

Dr. Bachchan and Teji won wide acclaim during their younger days as a singing duo at literary meets.
