New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi said that she insisted Rahul Gandhi to join Union cabinet but the youth icon refused as he wanted to work for strengthening the party.

Addressing the media after second edition of UPA cabinet took oath at Rashtrapati Bhawan today, Sonia Gandhi said, ‘I insisted that Rahul should join the cabinet but he refused. He wants to work for strengthening the party.'

It is worth mentioning here that a demand for Rahul Gandhi to join cabinet was raised from all corners after UPA's clean sweep in LS Polls 2009. Congress General Secreatry Rahul gandhi is credited for party's good performance in the elections but he is reluctant to take up a position in the cabinet.

Earlier PM Manmohan Singh said, ‘Rahul Gandhi has so far not agreed to join government but I have not given up hope. He wants to work for strengthening of the party.'
