Imphal, Sept 3 Unidentified militants have exploded a powerful grenade in front of the house of a Manipur government official in Imphal West district, but no casualty was reported.

Police sources said today that the militants set off the grenade in front of the house of the executive engineer of the Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Naorem Surchandra, (57) at Uripok near here at around 10 pm last night.

The official and his family members were present at the time of the incident, the sources said. The motive behind the crime was not immediately known. However, the police would investigate if it had any connection with any monetary demand by any militant outfit.

Last Tuesday, some militants lobbed a powerful grenade at the house of consultant engineer of the Regional Institute of Medical Science and Hospital (RIMSH) Th Manihar at Khurai in Imphal East district. The grenade failed to explode.

Hundreds of employess of RIMSH including doctors launched a sit in protest yesterday at RIMSH and condemned the incident, RIMSH spokesman said.
