New Delhi, May 4 : The Centre today asked para- military force SSB to mount vigil along the international boundary with Nepal and alerted bordering states to prevent infiltration into Indian territory.

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the highly-porous 1,751- km Indo-Nepal border, has been sensitised to keep extra vigil to prevent movement of unwanted elements along the border by taking advantage of the fluid political situation there.

"The SSB has been asked to keep a close watch on the international boundary," a senior Home Ministry official said.

The SSB top brass at its headquarters here immediately swung into action and issued orders to field formations to heighten vigil and check any possible attempts of infiltrations.

The SSB chief M V Krishna Rao chaired an emergency meeting with senior officials and took stock of the situation.

"We are already maintaining a vigil on the border in view of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Today we reviewed the situation threadbare," Rao told PTI, asserting that the border areas were safe.

Sources said states on the Nepal border -- Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim -- have simultaneously been asked to remain on high alert. (MORE)
