Imphal, Aug 29 A local organisation has called 12-hour general strike in Manipur's hill districts on September 1 to press its demand for early elections to Autonomous District Councils (ADC).

In a statement here yesterday, the Indigenous Democratic Front (IDF) president N Charmroy said the strike would begin at 6 a.m. and appealed to the public to support the strike.

He said the state government had enacted the Manipur State Autonomous District Councils Act (MSDCA) 1971 to hold elections to the ADCs but it has not been able to conduct elections to the ADCs for the past 20 years.

"This is a clear sign that the government machinery has collapsed," Chamroy said.

Official sources said elections could not be held in time due to opposition from sections of the people who were demanding sixth schedule status of Manipur hill districts and efforts were now on to hold the elections under MSDCA as soon as possible.
