Bhubaneswar, Aug 24 East Coast Railway (ECoR) has launched a special awareness drive to educate road users about the precautions to be taken while crossing unmanned level-crossing gates.

A meeting has been conducted by senior railway officers on the safety drive to make it more meaningful and to help reduce the accidents at unmanned level crossing gates, Railway sources said

ECoR sources claimed that after launching a similar safety drive at unmanned level crossing gates in February this year, accidents had been reduced.

The fresh drive will emphasise on basic issues like alertness of the road vehicle driver while crossing level crossing gates.

The ECoR has carried out awareness campaigns at unmanned level-crossing gates all over the East Coast Railway jurisdiction on a regular basis to ensure strict compliance of safety rules by road users, the sources said.

Surprise checks were also being carried out near level crossing gates to see whether train drivers were adhering to the basic requirement of raising alarm in the form of continuous whistling while approaching or crossing unmanned level-crossings.

Pamphlets and safety posters were also being distributed to the public to make them aware.
