Development project for Brus in MizoramTags: Aizawl Published by: Noor Khan Published: Thu, 15 Oct 2009 at 21:01 IST Aizawl, Oct 15 Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today said the state government would take up development and matters related to repatriation of Bru refugees from neighbouring Tripura.
Stating this during budget speech, Lal Thanhawla said Centre has already agreed to provide Rs 33 crore for development projects in western Mizoram. "Persuant to the memorandum of understanding concluded between Mizoram government and Bru National Liberation Front (BNLF) on April 6, 2005, it was agreed that the state government would take steps to speed up development in the areas covering Bru settlements and that a special development project would be implemented depending on the quantum of assistance provided by Centre," he said. Hundreds of Bru tribespeople left Mizoram during the late 1997 following armed insurrection by BNLF cadre who allegedly killed a forest guard inside Dampa Tiger Reserve in October that year. The Brus have been lodged at six relief camps in Kanchanpur sub-division of North Tripura district since then. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Share it
