New Delhi, Apr 1 : To make the capital free from the plastic bags menace, Delhi Government is in the process of conducting a survey to identify illegally operating plastic units in the national capital.

The government said the drive to identify the illegal units is on in the national capital while submitting before the Delhi High court yesterday in a case pertaining to ban on usage of plastic bags in the city.

Enlisting several measures being taken to curb plastic nuisance, the government affidavit said, "The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) is in the process of conducting a survey in the non-conforming areas of the city for identifying the illegally operating plastic industrial units." There are some 173 registered manufacturing and recycling units producing plastic items besides plastic bags in Delhi and over 10 times that number are operating illegally.

Delhi recycles about 1.2 million tonnes of plastic a year of which about 90 per cent is done illegally by these several plastic processing units in residential areas like Seelampur, Vishwasnagar, Shahdara and Jawalapuri.

After the survey is conducted, notices will be issued to them for violating plastic recycling and manufacturing rules as the high court order restrict use of plastic bags in the city, the affidavit said. (MORE)
