Mexico City: At least 29 children were killed and more than a dozen others were injured when a major fire broke out at a day care centre in northwestern Mexican city of Hermosillo on Friday.

The victims, aged six months to five years, had been staying at the center next to a tire dealership that caught fire. The flames jumped to the neighbouring child care facility, officials told the media.

The fire that started at 3.00 PM in the afternoon was controlled within two hours. Most of the children died of asphyxiation.

Firefighters had to knock holes in the walls of the building to rescue children.

Dozens of ambulances are surrounding the area with thick smoke in the air.


At least 176 children are reported to have been at the centre when the fire began.

Terrified parents rushed to city hospitals - desperate for news about their children, many of whom remained unaccounted for.
