Mangalore: Police arrested a member of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and four of his associates whose arrest led to uncovering of a plot of kidnapping for ransom and assassinate political leaders to disrupt coming Lok Sabha polls in Karnataka.

The prize catch was that of 38-year-old Rashid Malbari alias Double, who is wanted by the Interpol, is an aide of Chota Shakeel of Dawood Ibrahim gang and was also involved in the attempt on the life of Chota Rajan in Bangkok in 2000 (after the two fell apart), in which Rajan escaped unhurt and his aide Rohit Verman was killed, Karnataka DGP Ajai Kumar Singh told reporters today.

Arms, ammunitions, lethal weapons, SIM cards of India and foreign origin, Rs 19,000 were seized from them, he said.

He said the police's special teams working on information that an underworld gang, on directions from abroad, had conspired to execute or kidnap for ransom of nearly five crore rupees and to assasinate some promient persons in public life so as to dispurpt Lok Sabha poll process.

The police intercepted a car and arrested three associates of Malbari-- T A Sayaf, Mohammad Hasim and Ibrahim.

The trio during interrogation revealed the presence of Malbari and Sahil Ismail Sheikh who were also nabbed in a swift action, he said.
