Tiruchirappalli, Jan 13: A young couple had been arrested for allegedly burning to death a 20-year old girl at Karumandapam near here on December 26.

S Vasanthi and M Nithya, classmates in a college here, were in love with one Venkatesan. Nithya had been insisting that Venkatesan should marry her. Since Venkatesan wanted to marry Vasanthi, both of them hatched a plan to do away with Nithya.

They asked Nithya to come to the house of Vasanthi when her parents had gone out and allegedly drugged her with sleeping pill and then burnt her to death. The couple then fled the house, leaving the charred remains of Nithya.

Vasanthi's father assumed that it was his daughter who had committed suicide and informed police, who registered a case of suicide and closed it.

The murder came to light when Vasanthi appeared before the Cantonment police station here along with her lover Venkatesan and requested them to help in their wedding as their parents were opposing it.

When police verified the couple's details with their records, they came across the sucicide case of Vasanthi.

Police later found that the girl who died at Vasanthi's house was in fact Nithya. Vasanthi told the Police that she had murdered Nithya as she threatened to expose her love affair to her parents.
