Convict in ex-minister murder case tries to leave country; held

Tiruchirappalli (TN): Industrialist S A Raja, sentenced to double life imprisonment early this week for murder of a former Tamil Nadu minister, was today arrested at the airport here while allegedly trying to flee to Sri Lanka.

As Raja was proceeding to board the Sri Lankan Airlines flight, immigration officials grew suspicious and asked him to report to the airport police personnel. "He cooperated with us and came back," a police official said.

"We are inquiring why he changed his normal way of dressing, which included a cap, and why he tried to leave for Sri Lanka when he has been convicted and sentenced by the Madras High Court," the official said.

On Wednesday, the High Court reversed acquittal of Raja by a trial court and sentenced him to double life imprisonment after convicting him for murder of former Tamil Nadu Minister Aladi Aruna and his friend R Ponraj near Alangulam in Tirunelveli on December 31, 2004 over business rivalry.

Police would interrogate Raja, who runs a string of educational institutions in the region, to know whether he was attempting to flee the country, the official said, adding Tirunelveli police had been informed about his detention.
