Call all-party meet on Munnar: Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram: Opposition leader in the Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy today asked Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan to urgently convene an all-party meet to discuss the issue of encroachment in the hill station of Munnar.

Accusing LDF Government of failure to retrieve vast stretches of encroached land, he said Government was indulging in "diversionary tactics" instead of taking effective steps to take the public land encroached by private interests in Munnar in Idukki district and nearby Chinnakkanal.

While Achuthanandan had said check dams built by Kanan Devan Hill Plantations (of Tata Group) in the area would be demolished, the position government took in the case in the High Court was contrary to what he had said, Chandy, a former Chief Minister who heads Congress-led UDF, said.
