BSF's revamping drive for North EastTags: BSF , Karimganj (Assam) Karimganj (Assam): The BSF is going in for a massive modernisation drive worth Rs 3000 crore most of which will be implemented in the North-East region.
The North Eastern sector having boundary with Bangladesh is sensitive and most of the projects under the modernisation drive will be meant for the region, BSF Director General M L Kumawath told reporters here today. Kumawath, who visited BSF's border outposts (BOP) mainly in the Karimganj sector, said Hand Hold Thermal Vision (HHVT) which will help detect infiltrators from a distance of five km will be provided under the new scheme. Every border outpost will be provided by a motorcycle and a bicycle each while out of the six helicopters at the disposal of the BSF, one will be deployed in the North Eastern sector which has a 4,936 km boundary with Bangladesh, he said. Stating that 80 km of border fencing has been completed out of the total of 126 in South Assam's Barak valley sector, Kumawath said 500 new border outposts will be opened all over the country out of which 300 will be in the N-E region.
