BJP demands disqualification of Chavan

Mumbai: BJP today demanded that Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan be disqualified for a period of three years on grounds of failure to lodge his election accounts in the time and manner required by the law.

Party leader Kirit Somaiya told reporters that the Election Commission had sent a copy of Chavan's reply in response to their letter regarding the BJP's complaint.

"EC should not act as a postman and be a mere spectator.

It should act and declare him disqualified under section 10-a of the Representation of People's Act for a period of three years," Somaiya said.

BJP will send a legal representation in this regard during the week, he said.

Somaiya was critical of the Chief Minister's reply to the letter of the EC. "Chavan has chosen to ignore the charges levelled by us against him.
