Lucknow: Underworld don Abu Salem will appear before a CBI court here on Tuesday in a fake passport case after a request by the CBI to hold the trial through video conferencing was turned down due to lack of equipment.

Salem is currently lodged in a Mumbai jail after being extradited from Portugal and is being tried here. He and his wife Samira managed to get passports from Lucknow on fake names without coming to the Uttar Pradesh
capital. There are 40 accused in the matter. As many as 32 witnesses have already deposed in the case that has been going in the court since 1993.

Salem was brought to the city in tight security by Pushpak Express Tuesday morning. He was to be produced before the court in the month of January but the hearing was deferred due to some unknown reasons.

Judicial Magistrate (CBI) Saif Ahmed had directed on Dec 12 last year that Salem be brought here on "B" warrant. Ahmed rejected the CBI's request to hold the trial through video conferencing owing to security reasons saying
there was no infrastructure here to hold such a trial.

The court had declared Salem an absconder.
