5 dead, 40 fall ill due to suspected food poisoning

Aligarh: Five persons died and 40 others fell ill due to "suspected" food poisoning in the district, official sources said. The incident took place earlier this week at Kokila village in the district.

The victims complained of illness after allegedly consuming bread made of adulterated oil and flour at a feast organised by a villager, official sources
said. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where four persons were declared brought dead, while one died while treatment, they said.

The food samples have been sent to the government laboratory at Agra for testing and the report is awaited, ADM (Aligarh) Shailendra Singh said. However, according to preliminary enquiries, the incident was caused most likely due to the "edible oil or flour which was used for making the bread", he added.
