44 slaughter houses in Maharashtra asked to shut down

Mumbai: Armed with a Bombay High Court directive, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has ordered immediate closing down of 44 of the 53 slaughter houses in the state as they were found to be operating under unhygienic conditions and flouting norms.

These slaughter houses were running without making arrangements for disposal of liquid and solid waste in keeping with the provisions of law, said an affidavit filed by MPCB before the High Court yesterday.

The affidavit was in reply to a PIL filed by Shree Atmakamal Latipurushwarji Gyan Mandir Trust, a religious organisation.

The MPCB said it had ordered the Municipal Corporations of Nandgaon, Panhala, Yeola, Morshi, Yerandal, Selu, Nagpur, Beed, Buldana and Parbhani to close down slaughter houses operating in their jurisdiction, counsel for the petitioner, Prafulla Shah, told PTI.

Some slaughter houses had been earlier served show- cause notices, while penal action has been taken against a few others in areas such as Thane, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Malegaon, Karmala, Junnar and Nandgaon, he said.

Earlier, hearing the petition, the Bench headed by Chief Justice Swantanter Singh and Justice Ajay Khanvilkar had asked MPCB to take action as per law.
