30 killed in Dehradun road mishap





Dehradun: In one of the worst accidents in recent years in Uttarakhand, 30 people, mostly 'kanwarias' were killed, and 13 others injured when a bus fell into a gorge in Uttarkashi district today, a day which also saw 11 people perishing in another mishap in Tehri district.

In the first incident, police said thirty people drowned and 13 were injured when the private bus going to Gangotri fell into Bhagirathi river near Bhatwari in Uttarkashi district this morning.

The exact cause of the accident was not known which occurred. Most of the victims were 'Kanwarias' (devotees of Lord Shiva), who were going there to take Ganga water back home.

Soon after the accident, top police and administrative officials reached the spot and began rescue work. Only four bodies could be fished out from the swollen river.

Nearly 43 persons were travelling in the bus, including some teachers and army jawans, who had boarded the bus at Uttarkashi.

As dusk fell, authorities suspended the rescue operation.

Senior police officials said they would resume it tomorrow to search for more bodies. .
