14 dead, 27 ill after consuming hooch in Assam

Lakhimpur, Apr 5 : At least 14 people, including two women, have died and 27 others seriously ill after allegedly consuming hooch in Assam's Lakhimpur district.

The first death in Saboti area near Dohing Tea Estate, 11 kms from here, was reported late last night. Locals, mostly from urban areas, have been consuming hooch brewed inside the tea estate and sold at Kakoi Rajgarh area in the town, since yesterday morning, Lakhimpur Superintendent of Police Ataur Karim told PTI.

The Deputy Commissioner of the district has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.

The first case was referred to the civil hospital in the afternoon. Others have been admitted to different hospitals here.

The condition of six, who have been shifted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital, was stated to be critical.

Polie have launched a search operation to nab those involved in the brewing and sale of hooch. The excise department has also launched raids to seize hooch.
