रक्षाबंधन पर बहनें भाइयों की दाहिनी कलाई में राखी बांधती हैं, उनका तिलक करती हैं और उनसे अपनी रक्षा का संकल्प लेती हैं.

खास बात तो यह है कि राखी हिन्दुओं का त्यौहार है लेकिन इसे दूसरे धर्म के लोग भी मनाते हैं. रक्षाबंधन यानी राखी सावन पूर्णिमा के दिन मनाया जाता है. रक्षाबंधन का धार्मिक और पौराणिक महत्व भी है. वामनावतार नामक पौराणिक कथा में रक्षाबंधन का प्रसंग मिलता है. महाभारत में भी रक्षाबंधन के पर्व का उल्लेख है.

कहा जाता है जब युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान कृष्ण से पूछा कि मैं सभी संकटों को कैसे पार कर सकता हूं, तब कृष्ण ने उनकी और उनकी सेना की रक्षा के लिए राखी का त्यौहार मनाने की सलाह दी थी.

इसके अलावा एक और प्रसंग जब शिशुपाल का वध करते समय कृष्ण की उंगली में चोट आ गई, तो द्रौपदी ने खून रोकने के लिए अपनी साड़ी फाड़कर उनकी उंगली पर बांध दी थी. इसके बाद द्रौपदी के चीरहरण के दौरान भगवान कृष्ण ने बहन की रक्षा की.
